I went home demotivated each night, thinking I had made a big mistake entering this field. You know what’s interesting is that one day he invited me out for after work drinks, and he was a different person.

It occurred to me that this was his way of motivating me, and it must have gotten results for him before.
A while later, he was promoted and I received a new supervisor who was as nice as could be.
Spencer made me think I really was useless, but this new one encouraged me and had patience for me. He would compliment my good work while also kindly calling out mistakes.
I advanced much quicker with this approach, and in my later years I have realized that this was an important lesson. Spencer made me build barriers within myself that limited my progress.
As soon as I had a more realistic view of my capabilities and encouragement, I was able to fully work on my potential. In life, you don’t want a Spencer in your head.

If you allow it to happen, you can be beaten down by life. In my situation I spoke of earlier, I let someone else beat me down verbally until I felt like I was less capable than I was.
